Product Questions
1.Are there different levels of theft protection?
The majority of computer thefts are considered to be “casual” or “opportunistic” crimes where the equipment is unprotected and the thief just walks away with it. Basic computer cable locks and kits are a cost effective way to combat casual theft. For higher risk areas like schools, libraries, interactive displays or other public areas, plate security systems are sometimes necessary. With plate security systems the equipment is attached to a steel plate that is locked to a second steel plate bolted to a fixed surface. This solution is more expensive but very secure. In even higher risk situations, some government installations for instance, a steel enclosure can be employed. Steel enclosures enhance security by adding a physical barrier between the thief and the protected equipment. Finally, there is a software solution, PC and Mac PhoneHome available that is very effective in recovering computers once they are stolen.
2. What is a cable computer lockdown?
A cost effective solution to casual theft by employing cables, locks and brackets to physically lock the computer to a secure surface.
3. Do I have to pick particular “security kit” or can I choose my own components?
On the SecurityKit.com site you will find a number of “kits” using various types of cables, brackets and locks as well as explanations on where they are applicable. All of the hardware in the kits is also available individually in our Parts & Accessories section.
4. What is a “Special Cable with Keyhole Plate”?
Standard cables have a fitting on one end with a hole in it so the shackle of a padlock can pass through it – attaching it to a bracket or preventing it from passing back through the bracket. This fitting on a standard cable is too big to fit though some brackets like the Micro Clip or through the attachment rings found on many (Dell and other) computers. The Special Cable with Keyhole plate has a very narrow end that fits through a Micro Clip or attachment ring. It is often used for lockdowns of more than one computer as in computer labs or classrooms.
5. Do you have specific computer lockdown solutions for computer labs and classrooms?
We often use Micro Clips for the flat panel monitors many labs are equipped with now and wherever possible we use the ring attachment already present on many CPUs. We customize the Special Cable with Keyhole Plate to the specific length needed and lock together a number of computers in series. This is one of the most cost effective computer lockdowns we recommend but if you are unsure of the best configuration please call us.
6. What is a “Micro Clip”?
The Micro Clip is a stainless steel bracket meant to fit into the micro security slot (a 1/4 " x 1/8" rectangular slot usually in the side or back of your equipment with a padlock or chain icon next to it) that is built into virtually all laptops, most flat panel monitors, most Mac products and other equipment including PCs and projectors from many manufacturers. The Micro Clip provides a fastening point to secure equipment (with a cable and lock) and avoid the necessity of having to use a larger more intrusive glue-on bracket.
7. What are plate security systems?
Plate security systems are security lockdowns using two steel plates; they are used in higher risk environments and they provide an extremely secure attachment. Basically, one steel plate attaches to your equipment and a second steel plate is bolted to a fixed surface. The two plates then lock together securing the lockdown. Call us if you need further information or a quote for a plate security system for your equipment.
8. What are security enclosures?
An even higher level of security is an enclosure. These are used in very high risk locations or to prevent any access to the computer or its drives. A steel enclosure is bolted to a secure surface, the CPU is inserted and connected and the front of the enclosure is locked. Steel enclosures are available in a variety of sizes and configuration; please call us for further information.
9. What is theft recovery software?
PC and Mac PhoneHome are award winning computer tracking and recovery software programs that enable the actual recovery of stolen computers. The software installs in minutes, operates at a low level using almost no resources and is transparent to the user. Every time the computer connects to the Internet a stealth email is sent out and archived. Should your computer ever be stolen these emails allow us, with the help of the local police, to track and recover it.
10. What are keying options?
Keying options referred to three ways that locks are commonly keyed – keyed differently, keyed alike and keyed differently with a master. Refer to our Keying Options Chart for an illustration.
11. When would I use the “Keyed Alike” option?
Keyed Alike locks all open with the same key. Any key opens any lock. Useful where you have more than one lock or kit and don’t want to keep track of which key opens which lock or where multiple locks are in the primary control of an administrator. Examples are an individual with two laptops to protect and a computer lab with multiple lockdowns. Refer to our Keying Options Chart for more details.
12. When would I choose the “Master Keyed” option?
Master Keyed locks and kits come with their own keys, which will not open any other lock, but there is a Master Key available which can open any of the locks in the set. This is useful where individual users need to be able to open their lock but not another user’s lock and where there is an administrator who needs to be able to open any of the locks. Example is an office where each employee has a company owned laptop. Refer to our Keying Options Chart for more details.
